Chapter Six
Clint
It seemed like hours had crawled past by the time that Carrie was finally finished with her Spanish Inquisition. She fired constant questions at Phoebe and occasionally Emilie. Turns out, we were right on the money with this place. The institute, as Phoebe called it, was originally a part of a privately funded program studying natural-born mutants. Usually, the mutantâs family would give them up willingly or they would just abduct them themselves. Then, all of those people that were ripped out of their lives would get locked away in tiny concrete cells and be tested on, day in and day out without pause.
Luckily, Carrie didnât press into the details of the tests too much because by the end of Phoebeâs brief explanation, I was about to start ripping heads off. The barest details about what they would put Abby and others like her through was filling me with a black, bubbling rage and I just wanted to start hitting things. This place was worse than what I imagined, I knew that they would test her powers, I just didnât think theyâd use every type of abuse to get what they want. Even in its current state, it seemed like peaches and cream now compared to what it was before the âfluxâ, as they called it. Everyone here didnât even know that the world was a wasteland now; they refused to leave the building out of fear of discovery. The cannas were also news to them. The solitude they worked for was obviously panning out for them to know so little. They felt the shockwaves of the bombâs impact and the âradiation waveâ, but the only thing they really noticed was how their mutations began to change. According to them, all of the mutâs previous abilities were multiplied exponentially or changed into something new.
We got a first-hand demonstration of this when Carrie asked the duo about their powers. Emilie just shrugged her off, stating simply that she was a vampire, but she adamantly refused to explain the circumstances or details of her mutation. Phoebe, however, unleashed her abilities on us with no warning whatsoever. She had one of the most subtle yet dangerous gifts I had yet to experience, she could make anyone⦠flustered for lack of a better word. Apparently, back when she was just a regular mut, she could simply look at someone and have them completely wrapped around her finger⦠or other body parts. But now she could completely incapacitate someone with her power. She compared it to releasing pheromones into the air, everyone close enough would only have eyes for her, and the allure packed a serious punch in the smallest dose. If I wouldâve paid more attention to her as she was speaking I wouldâve noticed how her skin began to softly steam, almost like she just got out of a hot shower, but then her mutation hit my brain. I lost focus on anything else except for her slight smirk, and my anxiety was replaced by a deep, powerful ache that was almost overwhelming in its intensity.
